Ammie & Blake’s Courthouse Ceremony and Glacier National Park Portraits

My friend Katie with An Epic Elopement texted me one evening as she and her husband were having dinner with one of her neighbors to see if I was interested and available for a weekday portrait session with them. They were going to be getting married at the courthouse soon and were hoping for some portraits at the courthouse, and then 'somewhere epic' later on.

Well, it doesn't get much more epic than Glacier National Park in this neck of the woods, even if it is winter and there are low clouds everywhere. We left the sunny, blue skies of downtown Kalispell to the completely socked-in winter setting of Lake McDonald and took advantage of all the beauty it has to offer.

Glacier National Park Maternity Photographer, The Dittmans

The Dittmans had quite the adventure in order to arrive at their portrait session on time. First, their flight was delayed coming into Missoula, so they arrived a day later than expected, arriving the afternoon of our scheduled session. Along with that flight delay, their luggage somehow managed to not arrive with them, so they had no clothes for the session (though a quick trip to Target on the way to the Flathead Valley made up for that.) Finally, it was the week of historic flooding throughout Montana, making some areas impossible to get to for several days and even weeks, though thankfully that did not impact their drive. I met them at Lake McDonald Lodge, which is where they were staying for the first part of their trip, and they literally arrived 15 minutes before our session. Thankfully, that was just enough time to get settled and we had a delightful evening ahead of us as we documented this time before they moved from a couple to a family of three.

Glacier National Park Maternity Portraits, Cristine & Josh

Cristine and Josh seem to have developed a habit of finding themselves in front of my camera, and I do not mind one bit. We've met in Fall, Summer, and now winter. We need to get together in the Spring to complete the seasonal collection.

This session may have actually been my favorite as it's such an honor to continue documenting someone's life together as they move from a couple to a family.

West Glacier Family Maternity Photographer, the Flemmings

I met the Flemmings thanks to my involvement with Alpine Theatre Project and I couldn't be more thankful for that fact. They were in town performing and teaching as part of ATP's Broadway Summer Camp and seeing as how Jennie was expecting, they thought they should get some family maternity photos taken in and around Glacier National Park before returning home. I was fully supportive of this plan and had such an amazing evening with them. The weather cooperated and the smoke cleared out just enough for the day and it was just the perfect conditions.

Sandpoint Family & Maternity Photographer, the Stuarts

Like a lot of states around the country, Montana is now under a 'stay-at-home' order in hopes of combatting the spread of the Coronavirus. Thankfully, prior to that happening I was able to escape with the family to the in-laws in Northern Idaho for some extreme social distancing and some maternity photos in anticipation of another nephew!

Family photos can be tricky with a rambunctious two-year-old and a brother-in-law who sometimes acts like a two-year-old (joking!) but here's a little secret. Silly kiddos are infinitely more stressful on the family—and let's be honest, the mom primarily—than they are for the photographer. Oftentimes my favorite photos from family sessions are when the kid(s) are just goofing off and not following my direction or the pleas of their parents.

Anyway, I can't wait to meet the latest addition to our family, with the hope all of this COVID-19 stuff is largely behind us in a few months and life has returned to some semblance of "normal."

Pend Orielle/Sandpoint Maternity Photographer, The Stuarts

It isn't every day you get the opportunity to document an upcoming addition to your extended family. My sister- and brother-in-law are expecting a new addition, and while I've got a step-niece and an adopted nephew, this will be the first time I'm an uncle without any sort of qualifier. It also means my daughter will no longer be the youngest in the family, and she can't wait to boss around her younger cousin.

Austin Maternity Photographer, Christine & Josh on South Congress

Got to spend an evening with these two lovebirds on South Congress here in Austin, Texas. I can't wait to meet their new addition.
